Update 19 June 2020:
Gloucestershire County Council published a Statutory Notice in 2018 proposing to expand Warden Hill Primary School from 420 places to 630 places from September 2020. The expansion was proposed to accommodate growth in the number of primary pupils from anticipated additional housing across the west Cheltenham area. Following publication of the Statutory Notice, GCC received updated GP registration and birth data. A review of this data indicated that the increase in demand for places had moved back by at least 12 months and that there would be sufficient capacity in schools across the locality in September 2020. This was in part , as a result of the Cheltenham Local Plan being challenged and the house building programme being temporarily delayed, impacting on the immediate planned growth for the area.
Consequently, when the post-consultation report for the Statutory Notice was presented in May 2019 it was noted that providing additional places at Warden Hill Primary in September 2020 would have a short term negative impact on other local schools; and the decision on future expansion of Warden Hill Primary School was deferred until further information became available from the updated pupil forecasts in March 2020 to inform the decision.
The number of primary places in the local area has been expanded in recent years at Lakeside, Leckhampton and Shurdington primary schools. The latest 2020 pupil forecasts indicate that there will be sufficient capacity until at least 2023/24. GCC will therefore not progress with any further primary school expansions in the area, until such time as demand from new or additional housing development requires it. So to confirm the proposed expansion for Warden Hill Primary School will not proceed at this time.
