History Lesson on the High Street

On Friday 8th July, Year 5 started their day all meeting in town. In the classroom, in history they had been learning about how the high street looked in the past. In those days, shops were family run businesses ranging from the greengrocers or fish mongers, to the drapers or hosiery shop.

Each group took on a different area to see what shops are there now. We also looked at some old photos and tried to work out where the photographer would have stood. Our trip ended in Imperial Gardens with a well-deserved ice cream.

Back at school, we analysed our results to see how much things had changed and discovered less clothes shops, more restaurants and now many phone shops instead of radio shops.

It was great to be learning all about history right on our doorstep.
