As we approach the summer holidays, we would like to encourage all of our children to keep reading regularly throughout the break.
Summer is often a busy time filled with holidays, days at the beach, family visits, travel adventures and time spent enjoying the outdoors. However, wherever summer takes you, there is always time to read. Whether it is a chapter before bed, a magazine on a long journey, a comic in the garden or a story shared together on holiday, every page makes a difference.
Reading is one of the most important skills children develop in primary school. Research consistently shows that children who read regularly not only make stronger progress in literacy, but also develop wider vocabulary, greater confidence, improved concentration and a deeper understanding of the world around them. Just 10–15 minutes of reading each day can have a significant impact on maintaining and developing these skills over the summer months.
This year is particularly exciting as Gloucestershire celebrates its Year of Reading. Throughout the year, a wide range of events, activities and opportunities are taking place across the county to inspire a love of books and stories.

Gloucestershire Libraries recently visited school to introduce children to their upcoming Summer Reading Challenge, a fantastic opportunity to keep reading, earn rewards and discover new books throughout the holidays.
