We encourage pupils to take increasing responsibility for their learning, developing independence, resilience, and confidence. Through teamwork and communication activities, children gain a strong sense of belonging, while participating in house events and collaborative projects. Our inclusive approach ensures that every child feels valued and supported, reflecting our ‘belong’ value and reinforcing our commitment to belong, explore, succeed.
This year, we explore different time periods to answer key questions about the past, including: “How has Cheltenham High Street changed over time?”, “Were the Vikings ruthless invaders or peaceful settlers?”, and “How has crime and punishment evolved throughout history?”.
Our teaching nurtures curiosity about the world, encouraging children to think as global citizens. They explore the causes and impacts of deforestation in the world’s rainforests, developing awareness and empathy for global issues.
Our curriculum provides diverse opportunities for children to succeed and develop their creativity. They enjoy constructing frame structures, working with electrical systems, and cooking savoury muffins. In STEM-focused projects, children design and build their own motorised K’NEX fairground rides, applying science, technology, engineering, and mathematics in a fun, hands-on way. Art lessons introduce the works of Edvard Munch, Nnenna Okore, and Beatriz Milhazes, inspiring children to create their own masterpieces.
We offer a wide range of additional responsibilities and leadership opportunities. Children can represent their peers on the School Council or Eco Council, become Art Captains, take part in representative sports, or develop their oracy skills in competitions such as ‘Look Who’s Talking’. They also enjoy weekly swimming lessons, with the opportunity to take part in a swimming gala, promoting fitness, teamwork, and confidence in the water. These experiences help pupils build confidence, teamwork, and a sense of responsibility for their community.
Our love of books is central to everyday classroom life. Children enjoy listening to their teachers read the carefully chosen ‘class reads’ each day, fostering a lifelong passion for reading and encouraging independent exploration of stories and ideas.
Learning extends beyond the classroom. Children engage with our school environment and on trips, conducting Geography fieldwork in The Forest of Dean and exploring Viking life at Bishop’s Wood. They also learn essential life skills, including first aid, and develop personal safety awareness during an interactive, informative visit to SkillZone in Gloucester.
We are immensely proud of what the children achieve by the end of the year—and they are proud of themselves too! Every activity, lesson, and opportunity is designed to unlock the potential in every child, helping them belong, explore, and succeed.
