Headteacher's Update
Dear Parents,
Happy New Year! I hope you all had a wonderful Christmas break. I spent time up in Scotland with my family and Murphy thoroughly enjoyed exploring both the West and East beaches in St Andrews!
It has been fantastic to see how well our children have returned after the holiday—they have settled straight back into the routine of school life with enthusiasm and focus.
School Council and Eco Warriors Spring Term Elections
We are inviting children in Years 1–6 to stand for their class’s School Council and Eco Warrior representative positions for the Spring Term.
For information about the roles and responsibilities of these positions, please read the KS1 and KS2 job descriptions which can be found on the School Council and Eco Warrior pages of our school website.
School Council
Eco Warriors
Last year, we introduced a system to enable more children to take on these roles during their time at Warden Hill.
Your child will only be able to stand once for each role in Years 1–2, Years 3–4, and Years 5–6. Therefore, if your child is in Year 2, Year 4, or Year 6, and was elected as an Eco Warrior or School Council representative in the Autumn term or last year, they will not be able to stand this year for the same role.
Children need to inform their teacher by Wednesday 14th January if they wish to stand.
Elections will take place on Friday 16th January.
Children must have prepared something in advance and bring it with them on voting day in order to stand.
Years 1–2
Children need to draw a picture or make a poster to present to their class.
Years 3–6
Children need to create a short verbal presentation (no PowerPoints). They may use props such as posters or pictures, but nothing should be handed out to the class.
Parents are welcome to support their children in preparing, but all posters and presentations must be the children’s own work.
Good luck to all candidates!
Reception: Towers and Turrets Day
As we outlined in our termly newsletter, we are holding our ‘Towers and Turrets Day’ this term! It is an extremely exciting day whereby children come into school dressed up as something related to our learning about castles. In the past we have had dragons, knights, princesses, kings and queens!
The date for our ‘Towers and Turrets Day’ will be Friday 13th February.
Please can your child come to school in their costumes that day. They will be going outside for break and lunch as normal so they will also need to bring a suitable coat and alternative outdoor shoes (if needed).
Year 2: Common Exception Words
Your child will be bringing home a spelling sheet this Friday which lists all of the Year 2 common exception words. By the end of Year 2, it is expected that children are able to read and spell all of these words.
We regularly practise these common exception words as part of our morning work, and they are also covered in our Phonics lessons, where we discuss spelling patterns and strategies for remembering them. We have highlighted the words your child is currently able to spell. If you could spend some time practising the words that are not highlighted, this would be very helpful.
These spelling sheets are stuck in your child’s spelling book for easy reference, and they are welcome to use their spelling book to practise in. Please note that their weekly spelling will include a selection of words from the Year 2 common exception word list.
We will also be reviewing and updating the children’s progress with these words later in the term/year.
Year 2: Tudor Houses - boxes needed
The children in Year 2 are really enjoying their history this term and are learning all about the Great Fire of London. As part of this unit, they will be safely burning model Tudor houses on the school field to enhance their understanding of the events that took place in 1666.
Please could your child bring in a small cardboard box, no larger than a shoe box or cereal box, which they will use to create their house, by Friday 23rd January.
Use of AI in school - action required
Dear Parents and Carers,
At Warden Hill, we are always looking for new ways to make learning exciting and effective.
We’re writing to tell you about how we’re starting to use Artificial Intelligence (AI) to enhance children’s learning. It is a fast-moving area which children will increasingly need to understand, and which we think is going to be of great benefit for staff and children.
There are two broad ways in which our school might use AI: firstly by teaching staff in order to enhance the learning experiences of children and secondly, by children themselves using programs carefully selected by teachers.
All of our use will conform to our new ‘Use of AI in School’ policy (which will be available shortly). A common way AI might be used would be to summarise the complex information found in academic publications e.g. In Year 4, when looking at classifying living things in science, to identify which characteristics of a vertebrate would classify them as a reptile.
As an example of how it might be used with pupils’ work, we may want to use secure AI tools to look at children’s writing by photographing a large selection of it across the class. This is then collated by the AI tool and, when informed of the learning intentions, can then provide synthesised feedback and next steps. The goal isn’t simply to spot mistakes like spellings – it’s to help both teachers and pupils understand the next steps in children’s learning and to present these in different or interesting ways.
By looking at children’s work, AI tools might, among many other things:
1. Spot Patterns: Help children to see mistakes that are made and turn mistakes into opportunities for everyone to learn.
2. Boost Writing Skills: Give helpful tips on how sentence structure might impact the reader, or on how to use better language in very specific situations. For example, which of the 100+ words for ‘good’ might be appropriate to best describe a character in their narrative writing.
Keeping work safe and private
We know your child’s work belongs to them, and keeping their information private is our top priority. With that in mind, we will always ensure work is:
• Anonymous: Before the AI sees anything, we remove all names, places or personal references. The tool only sees the words and sentences, never who wrote them.
• Private & Secure: Your child’s work won’t be posted online or shared publicly. It’s used only for learning within our secure school system. We are using only using select tools and using them in accordance with DfE guidance.
To make this work, we need your consent to use your child’s anonymous work. A form has been distributed via email and/or Eduspot app. Please submit your response to confirm you are happy for us to use work in this way in order to enhance your child’s learning.
Thank you so much for your support,
Mark Bailey and Sam Williams

Safeguarding and Well-being Spotlight: Setting Device Rules for the New Year
After Christmas, many families welcome new technology into their homes. The start of a new year is the perfect time to review your family’s rules around devices and make sure expectations are clear. Setting boundaries early helps children develop healthy habits and stay safe online.
Key Points to Consider
- Agree on screen time limits and stick to them.
- Talk about online safety—privacy, sharing personal information, and what to do if something feels wrong.
- Encourage balance: time offline for family activities, hobbies, and rest.
- Keep communication open so children feel comfortable discussing their online experiences.
Simple Strategies
- Charging and overnight storage outside of bedrooms.
- No Tech Zones such as the dinner table.
- Parents to know all passwords for devices and apps.
- Explore monitoring options to help manage device use.
Built-in Free Tools:
- Google Family Link – Great for Android; manage apps, screen time, location, and content filtering.
- Apple Screen Time – Ideal for families using iPhones/iPads; robust controls across Apple devices.
- Microsoft Family Safety – Best for Windows PCs and Xbox.
To support you, we’ve created a short Well-being Video and a helpful poster, available on our Well-being Chat page: https://youtu.be/0Qvo9xfzg0w
Please also take a moment to watch our Safeguarding Video, which outlines our commitment to keeping children safe: https://youtu.be/4CggI74X4QQ
Let’s work together to make technology a positive part of family life in 2026!
