Headteacher’s Update

Dear Parents and Carers,

It has been another wonderfully busy week in school, full of moments that remind me just how special our community is.

Mathematics

This week I had the pleasure of meeting with Ed Neale, the GLOW Maths Hub Lead, based at Balcarras School. I was delighted to show him our school in action and, of course, to talk all things maths! We work closely with the GLOW Maths Hub and continue to benefit from their high-quality, research-informed professional development. I am particularly proud that our very own Mrs Prew, Year 5 teacher, is a Local Leader of Mathematics Education for the Hub. This means she supports other primary schools across the region while also ensuring we, as a school, benefit from her expert knowledge, guidance, and passion for mathematics.

Spotlight on Attendance

I am also proud to share with you our new Spotlight on Attendance newsletter. As many of you know, Mr Antonious is our Attendance Champion and he has put together this important update outlining recent changes to how schools have been asked to track unauthorised absences (including holidays). Please do take a moment to read through this information carefully.

Healthy Living and Learning Award

We are absolutely delighted to announce that our school has successfully achieved the Healthy Living and Learning Award. The Gloucestershire Healthy Living and Learning (GHLL) scheme supports schools to strengthen pupil health and wellbeing through a comprehensive review of policies and practice. To receive the award, schools complete a detailed health and wellbeing audit and implement at least two interventions—one of which must focus on mental health—every three years. This is a significant piece of work, and I want to extend my sincere thanks to Mrs Redman, who has expertly and tirelessly led this process for our school for over 12 years.

Look Who's Talking

Yesterday morning, we held our Look Who’s Talking school final heats—and what an event it was! Children from Years 1 to 6 took to the stage and delivered incredible performances in front of an audience of more than 460 people. My heartfelt congratulations go to every child who stood up and spoke with such confidence and clarity. We were delighted to welcome Miss Church from Bournside School to help with the judging and she was deeply impressed by the poise, expression and coherence our children demonstrated. Thank you to Mrs Wintle and Miss Scarrett for co-ordinating the event for our school so well and they will be sharing the winners with you all very soon.

Young Voices

Last night saw one of the most exciting events of the school year: Young Voices in Birmingham, where we took a 60-strong choir. Our children were impeccably behaved and embraced every moment of the experience. They joined over 6,000 other young singers in an unforgettable two-hour concert with a full band, backing singers, and guest performers. A huge thank you to Mr Williams for co ordinating the event and to all staff who supported on the night. Your efforts ensured this magical opportunity could happen for our children.

Mrs Lewis and Miss Rand

Finally, we say a warm and heartfelt goodbye—for now—to Mrs Lewis, who begins her maternity leave today. RL parents are already aware, but we are very pleased to welcome back Miss Rand, who will be covering the class during this time. We wish Mrs Lewis all the very best for the exciting weeks ahead.

That just leaves me to say, I wish you all a restful weekend.
