In Year 2 at Warden Hill, our aim is to unlock the potential in every child by nurturing independence, curiosity and confidence as they prepare for their exciting transition into the Juniors. Building on the strong foundations established in EYFS and Year 1, we ensure that pupils make secure and sustained progress through a carefully sequenced curriculum. We continue to develop essential skills in reading, writing, mathematics, and wider learning, while fostering creativity, resilience, and a love of discovery - equipping every child with the knowledge and attitudes they need to thrive. Belong
Belonging is at the heart of everything we do in Year 2. Every child is valued, included and encouraged to celebrate their individuality while being part of a caring, respectful community. Through our inter-house events, forest school sessions and well-being days, children learn to collaborate, communicate and show empathy towards others. Our Year 2 pupils also take on leadership responsibilities within Key Stage 1 – helping to lead the Eco Council and School Council and taking on roles such as class monitors.
Explore
Learning in Year 2 is designed to be hands-on, engaging and inspiring. Children are encouraged to ask questions, make connections and explore ideas through rich, cross-curricular experiences. Our teaching builds progressively on prior knowledge so that understanding becomes increasingly deep and secure. Memorable topics include The Great Fire of London, which culminates in a dramatic re-enactment of the events of 1666, and our investigation into how nursing has changed over time. The excitement of performing in our KS1 Nativity builds confidence and develops spoken language.
Succeed
We are proud of how our Year 2 children flourish – developing into confident, motivated learners ready for the next stage of their education. Through high-quality teaching, clear guidance and a strong focus on developing a growth mindset, children learn how to take ownership of their progress and reflect on their achievements. Our approach uses assessment to identify misconceptions early and to ensure that all children keep up, not catch up. We celebrate success in many ways – from weekly assemblies recognising effort and perseverance to our ‘Wow Wall’, where children’s achievements are shared and celebrated when they meet the school focus for the week. These moments of recognition reinforce positive learning behaviours.
By the end of Year 2, our pupils leave Key Stage 1 as independent, resilient, and enthusiastic learners, ready to take on the challenges and opportunities of the Juniors – confident in the strong academic and personal foundations that will support their continued success.
