School Council and Eco Warriors Autumn Term Elections

We are inviting children in Years 1–6 to stand for their class’s School Council and Eco Warrior representative positions for the Autumn Term.

Last year, we introduced a system to enable more children to take on these roles during their time at Warden Hill.
Your child will only be able to stand once for each role in Years 1–2, Years 3–4, and Years 5–6. Therefore, if your child is in Year 2, Year 4, or Year 6, and was elected as an Eco Warrior or School Council representative last year, they will not be able to stand this year for the same role.

Children need to inform their teacher by Wednesday 17th September if they wish to stand. Elections will take place on Friday 19th September.
Children must have prepared something in advance and bring it with them on voting day in order to stand.

Years 1–2
Children need to draw a picture or make a poster to present to their class.

Years 3–6
Children need to create a short verbal presentation (no PowerPoints). They may use props such as posters or pictures, but nothing should be handed out to the class.

Parents are welcome to support their children in preparing, but all posters and presentations must be the children’s own work.

Good luck to all candidates!

House Cross Country
Friday 19 September

Children should come to school wearing their PE kit and school shoes. Trainers should be brought in a separate bag.

We advise that you provide your child with spare clothes in case it rains on the day.

Year 2 Geography walk

As part of our Geography unit, we will be exploring the local area over the next few weeks with a guided walk. The aim is to help the children develop their map-reading skills and enhance their understanding of our local geography. During the walk, they will follow a mapped route and take note of the various features they observe in the area.

Home Spelling Practice

In the next couple of weeks, your child will start bringing home a weekly spelling list to practise. These words are carefully chosen to reflect year group spelling patterns, statutory spellings, phonic knowledge and key classroom vocabulary. Alongside the list, teachers will provide a short task. Instead of a traditional test, a selection of the words will be revisited the following week through low-stakes activities such as wordsearches, unscrambles and dictation tasks, similar to the task they will have completed at home. We encourage the children to practise their spellings in whatever way works best for them—there is no set method, just whatever helps them enjoy the process as much as possible. Regular weekly practice at home is important, as it will strengthen spelling accuracy and also support children’s confidence in both writing and reading.

Reading Expectations

Please spare a few minutes to watch a short message from our Reading Leads reminding parents of school’s reading expectations:

  • Reading journals must be in school every day
  • Pink–Turquoise: each book read 3 times before change (new books on Mondays).
  • Purple–Lime: read at least 4 times a week, no need for 3 repeats.
  • Children record their own reading (date, title, pages).
  • Journals can include drawings, reviews or favourite words.
  • Book Talk task (Y2–Y6) goes home weekly for class discussion.
  • Read with your child, ask questions, and also read to them.

Reading for Pleasure

We are delighted to share some exciting upcoming events that celebrate our commitment to fostering a love of reading across the school.
As part of our Reading for Pleasure initiative, we have arranged for two wonderful authors to visit and inspire our pupils:

Reception and Key Stage 1 will be welcoming Sam Usher, a talented author and illustrator known for his beautifully imaginative picture books. Sam will be sharing stories, talking about his creative process, and encouraging our youngest readers to explore the joy of storytelling.

Key Stage 2 will be joined by Thomas Taylor, author of the captivating Eerie-on-Sea series. His visit promises to spark curiosity and creativity, as he discusses his books and the world of writing with our older pupils.
In addition to these visits, selected year groups will also be attending the Literature Festival, where they’ll have the opportunity to engage with a variety of authors, illustrators, and book-themed activities.
We’re thrilled to be offering these enriching experiences and hope they will continue to inspire a lifelong love of books in all our pupils.

Cheltenham Literature Festival

Year 3, Year 4 and Year 6 will be attending Cheltenham Literature Festival. Please see the below page for more information:
